Pink Floyd’s album The Wall is largely based on Waters’ life story and having sold 23 million units ranked as one of the top 3 selling albums of all time in America. The poignant single, Another Brick in the Wall (Part II) was also ranked number 375 on Rolling Stone’s ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time’ list.
Waters has always possessed strong political and social views. On 9 November 1989 the Berlin Wall fell and in tribute Waters staged one of the largest rock concerts ever, The Wall – Live in Berlin in 1990. Known for his spectacular performances, Waters installed a 25m by 170m wall, built across the set and Scarfe’s inflatable puppets were recreated on an enlarged scale. Waters then reunited with Nick Mason, Richard Wright, and David Gilmour for a one-off performance at Live 8 in 2005. This was Pink Floyd’s first appearance with Waters since their final performance of The Wall at Earls Court London 24 years earlier.
