3 Daft Monkeys release their new studio album, The Antiquated & The Arcane on 1st November 2010 through their own 3DM Records label. The hugely anticipated release is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2008 album Social Vertigo.
The Antiquated & The Arcane draws heavily from 3 Daft Monkeys experiences on the road and takes the listener on a rollercoaster journey via the frenetic, the serene and the surreal. Named in homage to the band’s local “Antiquated and the Arcane Society” where weird and wacky characters meet to talk about unusual or strange occurrences in Cornwall throughout history, it is an anthology of stories both shared with, and experienced by, the Monkeys.
The Antiquated & The Arcane demonstrates a leap forward for the quirky folk trio in both musically and in terms of production. It features their most mature song-writing to date with catchy hooks and melodic choruses aplenty.
Beautifully produced by the band themselves and mixed by Richard Evans (Real World) the album was recorded in an authentic ‘live’ studio setting.
The Antiquated & The Arcane has an intensity mixed with a light, almost ironic edge which provides the album with moments of bitter-sweetness. Tracks like Civilised Debauchery have a saucy, sexy carnival-esque quality, others like Love (sic) Fool are thoughtful and heartfelt. In the words of the band,
Folk music has been enjoying a renaissance in recent months with a number of acts smashing the stereotypes associated with ‘folk’ and cementing the genre firmly in the mainstream. The Antiquated & The Arcane provides an exciting addition to the current musical landscape where folk / acoustic inspired artists are enjoyed an unprecedented level of critical and commercial success. This, the 3 Daft Monkeys’ best work to date, could well be the one that takes them to the next level.
With a line-up consisting of Fiddle (Athene), 12 String Guitar (Tim) and Bass (Jamie), 3 Daft Monkeys weave world music influences around classic folk melodies, combining them with classic Pop sensibilities. The band deserve immense credit for their unique style and their DIY approach to the music industry which has seen them sell thousands of copies of each of their previous 3 albums without the backing of any record labels or widespread media attention.
Their reputation as one of the best live acts on the circuit has been earned from almost non-stop touring, whether that be on 40 date tours across the length and breadth of the UK, or playing to over 20,000 people at festivals including Cropredy, which led to them receiving the rare honour of being invited back the following year.
