Joan Of Arc Inspired Exhibition And Concert For May Bank Holiday

New Lexicons of Dark is a three gallery event and exhibition exploring darkness in art and music, which takes place in Shoreditch, London, on Monday 30 May at Red Gallery, Hoxton Gallery and The Courtyard Theatre.

Comprising an exhibition and installation at Hoxton Gallery, a symposium featuring panel discussion and performances at The Courtyard Theatre, followed by a seven strong line up of live performances by bands and artists exploring occult rock, dark noise and drone at Red Gallery. The programme, which will take place from midday until midnight on 30 May, has been inspired by and marks the death of martyr, posthumous Saint and ‘maid of heaven’, Jehanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc).

Featuring a special headline performance by acclaimed guitarist Alexander Tucker, who having just released his new album, Dorwytch, will present songs from live project Black Abba, a collaboration with with members of Sunday Mourning and Moss. New Lexicons of Dark also sees live acts including dub / doom metal outfit Necro Deathmort, fresh from the Camden Crawl; The Haxan Cloak who has recently been on tour with Wild Palms and will be exploring mystic and occult audio space with cello, field recordings, violins and hand-made percussion – accompanied on drums by Liam Sparkes of Trencher; grindcore and noise niks, Spastic Burn Victim; live art noise terrorists Sloppy Seconds; and an extended drone performance by Flight, aka Oli Don of Tetragrammaton.

Alongside the live acts at Red Gallery will be an array of projections and artworks including ‘The Funeral Parlour’ – a doom and drone lounge with DJs Hi Fi Sadist and Fail HDJ and ‘Seven Deadly Skeletons’ installation.

The New Lexicons of Dark exhibition at Hoxton Gallery will showcase over 30 artworks, from sculpture and painting, to drawings, prints and installations, in a boutique show presented in low lighting, against a backdrop of looping sonic art works.

Alongside the exhibition, The Courtyard Theatre presents ‘Darkness Visible’,

a symposium comprising a panel discussion and two live performances, which will explore notions of living with and dreaming into the dark. The panel features contributions from artist and musician Martin Sexton, Apiary Studios curator Leslie XX, filmmaker Mark XX and editor, curator and musician Mark Pilkington (Strange Attractor), who recently curated the ‘From Animism to Zos’ Salon at the ICA, as part of the current exhibition by Nathaniel Mellors.

Before the discussion, London artist duo Guy Harries and Yumi Hara Cawkwell, both lecturers at the University of East London’s Institute of Performing Arts Development, will present a live art and sound performance making a descent into the unconscious. Following the discussion, Paris based, New York musician Jozef van Wissem, fresh from a collaboration with American independent film director Jim Jarmusch, will perform a live acoustic set on his medieval lute.
